About the project

The European Green Deal sets Europe on an ambitious path to becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, while the EU Gender Equality Strategy aims to ensure that gender equality becomes a tangible reality across the Union. Bringing these two priorities together is essential—particularly in rural areas, where women remain an underused force for innovation and sustainable development. Strengthening the role of women in the energy, climate, and sustainability sectors not only advances equality, but also unlocks vital talent and leadership needed to drive Europe’s green transition.

The Rural Women’s Empowerment through GREen Social ENtrepreneurship (WE GREEN) project responds directly to this challenge by promoting green social entrepreneurship as a pathway for empowering women and revitalising rural communities. Through digital tools and social economy models, the project raises awareness of women-led green entrepreneurship, equips formal and non-formal educators with the skills to support it, and develops local programmes that enable women to launch and grow green initiatives in their communities. At the same time, WE GREEN will produce practical guidelines for policymakers and stakeholders at local, national, and European levels, helping to create the conditions for women’s entrepreneurship to flourish as a driver of inclusive and sustainable rural development.
